Talismans and Amulets

Do you believe in lucky or sacred objects? The language reflects the fact that many people did and still do.

The term could come from the French, Spanish or Italian word “talisman”; all three include similar-looking words for a lucky charm. All three terms derive from a single Arabic word for a charm, “Tilsam”. Tilsam in turn can be traced back to the ancient Greek verb telein, meaning “to initiate into the mysteries” or “religious rite”, and if we go even further back in time we can relate it to the Greek term “teleo” (“complete” and “to consecrate”), seeing also its relation to an action or ritual to endow the object with its power.

While the word talisman, in its strictest usage, refers to an object, even a human being or an animal can be considered a talisman, whose mere presence somehow causes magical things to happen.
